Family Development Program

Family Development works with people in the community to develop and provide resources and supports to encourage strong, healthy families. There is an emphasis on economic development to include budgeting, fiscal literacy; nutrition; parent support and education through Parents With Hope groups; life skills and family essentials. Some of the opportunities include:

Community Action Angels

Community Action Angels is a volunteer program for CAPCO. Volunteers throughout the county bring needed assistance to families going without the basic necessities needed to live a normal life. We are able to reach out and help many people that would normally go without assistance because they don't fit within the guidelines required to receive services. Projects include Coats For Kids to provide winter outerwear for the entire family; back to school supplies; materials and supplies for babies, etc.

Family Essentials

Family Essentials offers free clothing to families, toiletries and other personal items. We welcome clean donations in good condition.

Parents With Hope

Parents With Hope is a family life education and support group for parents with children of all ages from pregnancy on up. Participants get to decide what they want to learn and strengthen. Anything goes! Topics may include but are not limited to communication, step-parenting, addiction, discipline, sibling rivalry, child safety. Child care and dinner or snack provided.

Fiscal Literacy

Fiscal Literacy includes resources that encourage economic growth and solid financial foundations for families. These resources may include budgeting information, understanding credit and how to use it, resource development. One important resource is the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. This is a collaboration between CAPCO, Cornell Cooperative Extension and others partners in Cortland. The VITA program provides FREE income TAX PREPARATION and E-FILING for families who may be less able to afford a paid tax preparer. If you've worked in the past year and earned $40,000 or less you may be entitled to valuable tax credits (EITC)
